Mental health has been regarded as a taboo subject. These days when it has become prevalent among the millennials, it’s high time we overcome the stigma of mental illness and it should be treated accordingly.
According to program director of The One Algon Place Foundation Cel Gonzales, “Mas laganap siya ngayon, mas marami siya ngayon,”
What adds up to the problem is the shortage of trained specialists. With only about 700 licensed mental health workers, it creates a crisis as the ratio of specialists to individuals becomes 2:100,000.
“Sa kabuuan kulang,” Gonzales adds. “Hindi kakayain kaya importante na magkaroon ng programa hanggang sa level ng komunidad para sa mental health issues.”
Besides the inaccessibility and scarcity of these psychiatric services, they are also expensive. Thus, people who can’t afford these rates are unable to seek medical care and leave their conditions untreated.
As per the World Health Organization, only 3% of total government spending worldwide is dedicated for mental health.
There are, however, several communities that offer free consultations and services to people who may need them.
