Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos’ camp lambasts Vice President Leni Robredo for supporting Smartmatic despite Duterte’s call to end the deal with the Venezuelan tech provider.
Marcos Camp Speaks Up
The lawyer and spokesperson of Bongbong Marcos, Vic Rodriguez condemns COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez and VP Robredo for defending the Smartmatic despite tons of complaints against the provider. The allegations include the alleged inefficiency of the vote counting machines wherein hundreds malfunctioned during the canvassing last May 13. Added to that, the 7-hour delay of transferring the results which marred the process.
“Why is the Comelec and Mrs. Robredo so in love with Smartmatic? How much do they love Smartmatic?”
Robredo Defends COMELEC and Smartmatic
Robredo opposes Duterte on urging COMELEC to cut partnership with Smartmatic. Robredo said that the COMELEC should take into consideration on ending the deal with Smartmatic. Allegations of being cheated from the losing camp should not be the basis of such move. She states,
“We should not say just because our candidates lost, they were cheated. Let them explain the matter to us first. If the explanation is acceptable, that would be it. If it is not acceptable to us, that’s the time we complain. But we should be calm.”
Disrespectful of Bishops’ Grievances
The Marcos camp complaints that Robredo’s opposition statement in dumping Smartmatic is considered disrespectful to the grievances of Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo and San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza. The two bishops declare support on Duterte’s call to cut ties with Smartmatic and favors “hybrid election” wherein manual voting will take place to address the alleged inefficiency of VCMs.
Is This Another Call For a Bidding?
Last Sunday, Duterte advised COMELEC to end deal with Smartmatic and find another tech provider that is free from fraud. The president opens up a personal opinion that Smartmatic has created a hostile attitude among politicians due to irregularities and delays experienced during the tallying of votes.
Pending Electoral Protest
Bongbong Marcos has a pending electoral complaint against Robredo, nullifying the latter’s proclamation as Vice President after the occurrence of irregularities last 2016 presidential election.
