FOSHAN, China — Gilas Pilipinas concluded the group round in FIBA World Cup 2019 with a heartbreaking overtime loss, 84-81, from Angola on Wednesday, September 4, at the Foshan International Sports and Cultural Center.
Never say die
CJ Perez’s three-point shot tied the score at 73 with 33.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Perez, however, failed to make a basket in the remaining seconds of the game resulting in an overtime match.
The Philippine national team opened the overtime game with the first three points, but the Angolans were unshaken. The number 39 in the world took control of the extra period until the endgame.
Roger Pogoy managed a three-pointer to cut Angola’s lead into two. Unfortunately, Kiefer Ravena’s attempt for a three-pointer at the last crucial seconds of the game failed, leaving Gilas winless in the group stage.
Losing is not always a defeat
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao expressed disappointment over the defeat but at the same time believed that the team almost had a chance to win over the Angolans.
“We’re still disappointed but, at the same time, it’s a good feeling that we gave ourselves a chance to win in the endgame. It’s still kind of frustrating because we’re still not able to make our three-point shots. If we had made one or two more, it would have made the difference,” he said during a postgame interview.
