Vice-President Leni Robredo says that the defeat of Otso Diretso is not Kit Belmonte and Kiko Pangilinan’s fault. The two recently reportedly submitted resignation letter, quitting as the secretary general and Liberal Party president respectively.
Stepping down as LP leaders
Belmonte and Pangilinan takes the responsibility on the defeat of Otso Diretso last May 13 senatorial election. In an interview at Pag-asa Film Festival 2019 at Quezon City on Saturday, Robredo disclosed that she did not accept the resignation.
“Hindi nila kasalanan. Hindi nila kasalanan. Puwedeng maraming pagkukulang, pero hindi siya kasalanan noong dalawa.” she said.
Robredo called such act as a “noble way of accepting responsibility.” She adds,
“Ano iyon, very noble way of accepting responsibility, pero sinabi ko din sa kanila na kung ako lang magdedesisyon, hindi ko siya tatanggapin.”
The LP chairman considers loss of the eight candidates in the election as not a total loss for the party.
“Hindi ko siya nire-regard na total loss, kasi if at all, we were able to unite many forces na dati hindi united. So it is worth….fighting for, still, hindi lang for the elections, pero for many other issues that will face us.”
She insists that it is time for their group to be united for there will be more challenges to face.
Will there be a new LP President?
Meanwhile, no discussions made yet for the prospect of the new LP president. The group will discuss the agenda on the national executive council meeting before the State of the Nation Address (SONA).
“Ang scheduled na NECO namin is before the SONA, so pag-uusapan siya before the SONA. Pero nagkaroon kami ng informal gathering last week. Parang iyong sentiment ng halos lahat na members, huwag payagang mag-resign,” Robredo said.
However, a group meeting was conducted last week where members expressed disapproval of Pangilinan’s resignation, as per Robredo.
Leni defends Kiko Pangilinan saying,
“Iyong sa kaniya kasi, hindi naman niya sinasabi na ayaw niya ng posisyon. Ang sinasabi niya lang, ina-accept niya iyong responsibility doon sa pagkatalo ng Otso Diretso.”
